We all know we can't control the weather. So, what to do at the beach on a Red Flag Day? First, let's clarify what a red flag day on the Outer Banks means. When red flags are flying at the beach, it's a warning of rough ocean conditions, including high surf, breaking waves, and strong currents. For everyone's safety, swimmers are discouraged from entering the water.
While red flags mean no swimming, it doesn't mean no fun! We know the ocean's powerful waves and strong currents can be tempting, but safety comes first on these days.
Don't worry, there's still plenty to enjoy at the beach when red flags are flying. From relaxing pastimes to active pursuits, we've got you covered with a range of ideas to make the most of your day.
1. Beach Games
Easy set up and fun for all ages regardless of athletic ability, beach games are always a crowd pleaser. Some of our favorites: Spike Ball, Corn hole, Kadema, Velcro Toss and Catch, Bucket Ball, Ultimate Frisbee and Bocce ball. These beach games are bound to bring fun and laughter for your crowd. Level up and play tournament style, form your teams and build your brackets…bragging rights are on the line.
2. Play Ball!
The classics. Grab a buddy or two add a football, soccer ball, or volleyball and it is GAME ON!
3. Beach Olympics
Think team-building with a dose of choose your own adventure and family friendly competition. Choose your events for example; relay races, sand sculptures, scavenger hunts, an obstacle course or any combination of events that fit your crowd and you have the recipe for a great day on the beach. Add in an evening awards ceremony (ice cream sundaes anyone?) and you may just have a new annual tradition.
4. Build a Sand City

5. Set up a kiddie pool
It can be hard to keep small children from the water when it appears so inviting. A small kiddie pool filled with buckets of water can serve as a great spot for water play and cooling off when the ocean is too rough for a swim.

Everyone needs to eat. Take your time and enjoy some local fare. Pizza delivery at the beach perhaps?
7. Hunt for shells and sea glass.
Big waves bring in treasures from far and wide. Beach walks and treasure hunting is at its finest when the ocean is churning.
8. Rest and Relax
Settle in with a good book, enjoy the cool breezes and warm sunshine, take a mid-day snooze.
9. Go Fly a Kite!
Yes! The beach is the perfect place for kite flying. There’s just something magical and inspiring when a kite takes flight. Challenge your skills with a trick kite. Who can master a dive and turn?
10. Beach Clean Up
Windy weather and rough oceans tend to turn up ALL kinds of treasures – and trash! Take a beach walk and collect and dispose of any trash you may find. Even the smallest gestures make a difference and help keep the Outer Banks beaches clean.
