The Whalehead Club
The small village of Corolla is nestled amongst remote beaches and acres of national wildlife refuges. As the area has experienced increasing growth throughout the years, some structures remain as monuments of the Outer Banks of the past. One such monument is the Whalehead Club of Historic Corolla. This golden yellow building is impossible to miss against the backdrop of the Currituck Sound. Amidst the glitz and glam of the 1920s, Whalehead was the place to be on the Outer Banks. This iconic landmark of the Outer Banks was the Art Nouveau vision of Edward Collings Knight, Jr. As the wealthy began to migrate to the area, known for its abundance of waterfowl and small-game hunting, wealthy investors such as Mr. Knight and his wife, Marie Louise, decided to build residences on the island. Since the Knights death in the mid-1930s, their magnificent residence has experienced many different uses throughout the years. First, a bunker for the US Coast Guard during World War II, a school for boys until the early 1960s, then a rocket fuel test site, until finally Currituck County purchased the property and converted it into a public landmark of the area. Now, The Whalehead Club is restored to its former glory and is open for tours year-round. Experience the residence as the Knights would have in the 1920s thanks to its extensive restoration. History buffs will enjoy the significance of this member of the National Register of Historic Places. Not only is this unique structure an important facet of Outer Banks history, it also provides a stunning venue for weddings. The large grounds with scenic views of the sound and the beautiful architecture of the property make this spot an incredible choice for your big day. The grounds surrounding The Whalehead Club are a lovely area to explore. Stroll across the bridge, fish in the pond, or kayak out into the sound. The Currituck Lighthouse is just a short walk away between the trees, where you can climb to the top for a small fee. If you've never taken the time to explore this special area, it is definitely worth it!During the peak season, The Whalehead Club is bustling with events. Whalehead Wednesdays is a weekly event featuring wine tastings from Sanctuary Vineyards and Vineyards on the Scuppernog with live music and activities for the entire family. Whalehead Wednesdays run from the beginning of June through September 13th this year. In June, The Whalehead Club hosts the Under the Oaks Art Festival. This annual event is a free, two-day event featuring local artists and food.
